Dylan Sprouse excitedly reveals fresh insights into his romantic proposal to Barbara Palvin, recounting an adventurous hike in a dress shirt and a fortuitous encounter with a sea otter.
The model, aged 30, and former Suite Life of Zack and Cody star, aged 31, exchanged vows in Hungary in July 2023, opting for a charming ceremony at a church just outside Budapest.
In an exclusive sneak peek from the upcoming episode of the Tamron Hall Show, set to air on Monday, February 12, shared exclusively with PEOPLE, Sprouse unveils their shared affinity for sea otters and divulges the clever inclusion of one such creature in his proposal back in 2022.
“Big Sur boasts breathtaking beauty… and I knew it was the perfect location,” Sprouse shares with Hall in the preview clip.
He explains that one of the bluffs in Big Sur is renowned as “one of the most densely populated sea otter areas in California.”
“So, I thought, ‘We’ll kneel down with sea otters all around us… but just as we were entering the wildlife park, a ranger approached us and said, ‘Just so you know, we haven’t spotted any sea otters here for months,’” he continues.
Undeterred, Sprouse pressed on. “I thought, well, we’re here anyway, and I’m already dressed in a button-down for a hike.”
After trekking two miles in said button-down, Sprouse recounts how he “dropped to one knee overlooking a stunning vista, popped the question, thankfully, she said yes, and then right after, we spot a little head poking out of the water.”
The timely appearance of the sea otter added an extra touch of magic to the moment.
“And it flips onto its back, gazing up at us,” Sprouse elaborates.
“The sea otter truly blessed the occasion,” Hall remarks.
“He certainly did, it felt destined because he emerged just after she said yes,” Sprouse adds, noting that it was the first sea otter sighting in the area “in months.”
Their relationship began with a first date in 2018, culminating in an engagement in September 2022, with the couple choosing to keep the news under wraps for nearly a year.
They finally confirmed their engagement in an interview with V Magazine, conducted by Sprouse’s twin, Cole.
“We didn’t feel compelled to disclose every detail of our engagement to the public,” Sprouse tells the publication. “With Stephen [Gan] and the V team, we wanted to create something whimsical that played on the contrast between private and public. It was about challenging perception.”
Palvin adds that they wanted “to do things on our own terms,” although an early leak of the engagement made that challenging.
“When word got out that we were engaged, our PR team suggested we make an announcement or speak to various magazines,” she recalls. “That didn’t sit well with me because we were crafting our own narrative. So, I’m glad we stuck to our guns.”
