Christopher Towne decided to help a buddy rearrange some furniture. In the process, they discovered a secret passageway leading to a well hidden behind a cabinet—a hidden trapdoor.
Without asking his companion first, Christopher went to investigate the tunnel and unintentionally slipped, falling into the well. When his companion realized Christopher was missing, he moved fast and saw him standing in the water below.
He was able to extract Christopher from the well by using a sturdy rope that he discovered close by. When they summoned help after gathering their wits, they found that the cottage was more than 150 years old. According to historical documents, the well was initially next to the building, but when it was enlarged, boards were clumsily placed over it.
